Honesty & Impartiality

The DXRacer Air R1S is DXRacer’s top-of-the-range chair.

It surpasses all other models in every respect (and in price, too).

Its real trump card is clearly its mesh covering, which provides a level of comfort difficult to achieve with normal foam.

Why is that?

Because the mesh molds perfectly to the shape of your body, so you don’t even feel like you’re sitting down.

But that’s far from the only good thing about it – but that’s just the intro to the review!

I don’t need to introduce you to DXRacer any more, as I imagine any gamer knows a thing or two about the brand.

Basically, the brand was created in 2001, and at first they designed seats for sports cars.

Building on their know-how, they ended up creating a brand of gaming chairs with the aim of always offering the highest quality materials.

And the question you’re asking yourself now is, is it really worth it?

Well, stay with me, because I’m going to tell you all about it!

DXRacer Air R1S
dxracer air r1s review

I particularly recommend the DXRacer Air R1S for gamers who spend a lot of time sitting down.

For this kind of use, the mesh is really incredible.

But that’s not the only advantage of this chair, of course. The 4D armrests adapt perfectly to your posture.

Then there’s the off-center rocking mechanism, perfect for long hours of play.

(I’ll talk more about this later in the article, as it requires a lot of detail).

In short, if you’re looking for a quality, mesh chair, I’d recommend it.

BUT, if you’re only an occasional gamer, frankly, there’s no point in investing so much. You’re better off with a gaming chair costing less than $100.

If you’re too short, I wouldn’t recommend it either, as your knees would bump against the seat and that wouldn’t be pleasant.

The recommended height is between 1m80 and 2m00.

If you’re 1m78, that’s fine, but if you’re 1m70, don’t bother.

However, in terms of weight, it’s very wide, as it supports up to 150kg.

Now, if you’re still looking for a good gaming chair, but you’re too short for the Air R1S, check out my ranking of the best gaming office chairs.

No foam, but a top-quality mesh cover

Yes, that’s the big advantage of the DXRacer Air R1S: the chair isn’t padded with foam, but has direct mesh padding.

What does this mean for you?

Mesh has the great advantage of being ultra-breathable, thanks to the holes that let air through.

You’ll only feel like you’re not sitting down or up against a backrest.

So no more need to put a towel or sheet behind the chair to keep it from sticking to the backrest.

The other great advantage is that the mesh conforms perfectly to the curves of your body, so it’s going to fit you superbly.

Which, unlike a rigid backrest, is going to give you great ease and comfort.

The only thing that can sometimes be annoying is that if you often play in shorts and tend to move around too much, it can be a bit uncomfortable because of the friction on the mesh.

Rather pronounced side

By side cheeks, I mean the little sides that protrude from the chair at the back and seat.

(You see, on an office chair, the backrest is flat, but on a bucket seat like a gaming chair, the backrest has parts that stick out).

On the Air R1S, they’re quite pronounced, so you’ll be well supported, a bit like in a rally car.

That’s cool if you’re having trouble sitting properly, because it’ll help.

But if you’re really wide and not very tall, it’s more likely to bother you than anything else.

So be warned!

DXRacer Air R1S has an off-center tilting mechanism

The off-center rocker mechanism is a must-have when you buy a gaming chair at this price.

Why is that?

The off-center tilt mechanism, unlike the center tilt mechanism, has a tilt that takes place at knee level.

So basically, the seat will tilt from your knees, allowing you to keep your feet on the ground at all times.

(Unlike a centered tilt mechanism, where your feet would lift off the floor, because the tilt is in the center of the chair).

In concrete terms, this will prevent heavy legs by improving blood circulation in your legs and…

Relieve your hips, as a lambda-centered rocking mechanism tends to pull on the hips, which can cause problems.

(Maybe you’re already having bad luck right now…)

Class 4 cylinder

At this point, I’d like to say that for the price, it’s a good thing the cylinder is a class 4.

That’s the highest class, and it’s a class of cylinders that are very solid and sturdy, but also have a high power of ascent.

So, basically, your chair will never have any cylinder problems, and your chair’s height adjustment will always be smooth.

Steel skeleton, aluminum base

Here too, it’s flawless!

The steel structure is the best in the gamer chair sector.

And why is that?

Because, as well as being sturdy and durable, it’s also very light and therefore easier to move and roll!

But the real trump card is the aluminum base.

An aluminum base is really the best of the best.

Because, unlike nylon or metal, it can withstand pressure of over a ton.

So you’re not about to break the base of the chair (where the castors hang).

What’s more, I find it very aesthetic.

4D armrest adjustment

In terms of ergonomics, the 4-dimensional adjustment is the best you’ll find.

Basically, it lets you adjust the armrests as follows:

  • In height (so as to make a 90° angle with your arms, relieving pressure on your shoulders and preventing pain).
  • Width (ideally, the armrests should be as close as possible to the seat so that your shoulders aren’t over-stretched, otherwise the same problem could lead to injury in the long run).
  • Front to back (perfect for adjusting to the depth of your desk).
  • At an angle (very useful, because nobody plays with straight, stiff arms).

As you can see, every adjustment is possible, and this is the very definition of ergonomics: a chair that adapts entirely to YOU, not the other way round.

The design is very well realized and a little futuristic.

The mesh really brings a hyper-futuristic side to the chair.

And since they’ve spared no expense by putting it everywhere, the result is really aesthetic.

What’s more, it’s available in several color combinations.

For example, there’s black, white blue grey, white red black grey and others with even pink!

Next, the “Air” is embroidered on the cushion, and the DXRacer logo is engraved at the top of the backrest.

They didn’t try to overdo it by showing off their brand, and I really appreciate that.

In short, I really like the look of the chair!

Memory foam headrest with integrated lumbar support

I loved knowing that the headrest was memory foam.

It’s great for blood circulation and relieves tension.

So unlike conventional foam, it’s really top-notch.

Now you’re probably wondering what the headrest is for?

It’s designed to be placed in the hollow of the neck.

Why is that? Because the angle of your neck is supposed to remain “neutral”, i.e. neither tilted nor raised, but “neutral”.

And the headrest helps to maintain this angle.

As for the lumbar support, I really liked the fact that it’s integrated directly into the backrest.

It avoids having a rather annoying cushion that changes place 50 times a day, and that you always have to put back.

At least you set it once and then you don’t have to touch it again.

However, I’m a little disappointed that, unlike the Secretlab chairs, there’s no option to adjust the volume…

Knowing that both cost about the same, it hurts, but it’s in line with what’s currently being done, for example Quersus gaming chairs have the same “problem”.

Quality finishes

I must admit I wasn’t expecting anything different from DXRacer.

As a rule, they don’t do things by halves.

The finish is top-notch, as even the headrest is adjustable with “notches” and the mesh is very well pulled and secured.

It also exudes solidity.

Even the backrest cover (which hides the screws that fasten the backrest) is made of plastic, but it doesn’t stand out that much and doesn’t have that “cheap” effect that other covers have.

In short, a good point!

Smooth-running, floor-friendly castors

As for the castors, they’re smooth on most floors.

I say on most floors, because on a tiled floor they’ll be ultra-smooth, and the same on parquet, but…

On a linoleum floor, it’s clearly going to struggle, and I get the impression that 99% of gamer chairs have this problem.

So I can’t take away a star for that.

Secondly, there are strips on each castor, so you don’t damage your floors.

(Because if you do, it can leave marks or something).

Backrest tilts up to 135°

This is one of the faults of all DXRacer chairs.

They haven’t done much about the backrest angle.

135° is still fine, as it allows you to find a comfortable position and rest a little, but…

It’s nowhere near the level of chairs that allow you to recline up to 180° and watch a movie while lying down.

(Well, 180° is a bit of an exaggeration, as lying down isn’t exactly amazing, but 160° is really nice for watching a live twitch).

DXRacer Air R1S settings

On the side of the backrest, you’ll find the lever that lets you tilt the backrest.

Under the seat, there’s a large knob used to adjust the tension of the tilting mechanism.

The tighter the knob, the less the chair will tilt; the looser the knob, the more the chair will tilt.

You can adjust the armrests forwards, backwards and at an angle by moving them directly.

To adjust their width, there’s a knob in the middle of each armrest (on the side).

And finally, the height of the armrests can be adjusted via a knob in the middle of the outer side of each armrest.

Then, on the underside of the chair, there are two levers.

One for raising and lowering the chair and one for locking/unlocking the tilting mechanism.

Very easy to assemble and the manual is clear

I’m not the king of DIY, although I’m starting to get really used to assembling chairs.

That said, even as a beginner you won’t have any particular difficulty assembling it, it’s really well explained and even easier to assemble than a basic chair.

Everything has been thought of to make your work easier.

And for those who want to know: yes, all the tools go with it.

Customer reviews of this chair

As you can see from the reviews, this chair is highly appreciated for :

  • The gaming aspect (allowing reclining and many specific adjustments) AND the ergonomic aspect provided by the mesh.
  • The chair’s hyper-comfortability.
  • The price (surprisingly, people don’t think it’s too expensive, but I do, except on special offers).
  • And gamers really love the fact that there’s no imitation leather, so no risk of cracking leather and all that.
  • The lumbar support is also very much appreciated, as it’s built-in, so you don’t have to bother with a cushion.

In short, I’ve seen very few negative reviews, and usually they’ve just had another problem that had nothing to do with the chair.

Alternatives to DXRacer Air R1S

k seat oxygen 1.jpg

The K-seat Oxygen, less expensive, but also less qualitative.

This is because the armrests are only 2D adjustable, the tilting mechanism is centered, the foot cross is made of nylon (and therefore less sturdy than the aluminum one on the DXRacer), and so on.

The only advantage is that the backrest reclines up to 180°, and it costs less outside the promotional period.

What’s more, none of the cushions are memory foam, and the lumbar support is not integrated into the chair.

Nevertheless, I’ve put it on, as it also has a mesh backrest.

secretlab titan evo 2022.jpg

The Secretlab Titan Evo has a similar budget and no mesh backrest, but….

The lumbar support is integrated and fully adjustable in volume, the headrest is also made of memory foam, the armrests are also 4D, the tilting mechanism is also off-center, etc. And the backrest even tilts up to 165°.

What’s more, the backrest even reclines up to 165°.

In short, a great choice if you don’t mind having a mesh backrest.

arozzi vernazza soft fabric review

The Arozzi vernazza Soft Fabric is well-priced, and the fact that it’s made of fabric is very interesting, as you also get the “doesn’t sweat” advantage!

That said, although the price is right, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it as an alternative because of its 3D armrests.

But the rest is top-notch, with an off-center rocking mechanism, aluminum base, etc.

The real flaw is the armrest adjustment, but the price is right…
