The DXRacer Gladiator G001 can be considered the big brother of the old and very good DXRacer Tank.

It brings with it many new features and improvements…

…Aimed at the tallest gamers (1m80 to 2m00), it doesn’t skimp on quality.

You’ll get everything you need, from 4D armrests and high-density foam to an off-center tilt mechanism.

I just regret that there’s no integrated lumbar support like Secretlab does on their chairs (instead you just get a cushion).

Nevertheless, all this is tempered by the price, which remains very reasonable for a model aimed at large people, so I gave it a good mark.

What I also really like is that DXRacer was one of the first brands to make gaming chairs.

They started out making luxury car seats in the 2000s before setting their sights on making the highest quality gaming chairs with the best possible materials.

But in concrete terms, is it worth the price for what’s on offer? Follow me, because I’m going to answer that question.

Adapted to what playing times & profiles?

Let’s cut to the chase: the DXRacer Gladiator is a good choice if you spend around 5-8h/d sitting.

Beyond that, I recommend you take a look at the Secretlab XL version.

The integrated, adjustable lumbar support and other benefits I’ll talk about at the end of the article are really more suited to long hours of play.

However, I tend to recommend cheaper chairs when it’s worth it and you don’t play much.

But in that case, if you’re here, you’re obviously a big guy, so steer clear of cheap chairs.

Why should you?

Because you’ll never sit comfortably in them, and they’re likely to break pretty quickly.

As far as height is concerned, you’ll need to be at least 1m80 (otherwise the seat, armrests and backrest will all be too big for you).

And at most, 150 kg.

Cold-cured high-density foam

As this chair is designed to accommodate large, heavy physiques, high-density foam is more than necessary.

Why?

Because given your weight, the foam is going to be much flatter than a chair that would be used by frail physiques.

And if the foam wasn’t high-density, the seat would end up flattened like a pancake, and you’d feel the iron bars under your buttocks.

So it’s a good thing it’s high-density.

That said, the other big advantage is that the foam has been cold-hardened.

And when you say cold-hardened, you mean “open”, so basically it’s more breathable than normal foam.

And that, too, is a big plus for a chair designed for large physiques.

Because the bigger you are, the more you tend to sweat.

So it’s essential to use cold-cured foam to avoid this phenomenon as much as possible.

The side cheeks are not too tight and provide good support

The main thing that scared me about this model was the side cheeks.

(The sides of the chair’s backrest that press against our body).

As it’s a chair designed for older children, I was worried that the cheeks would be too tight.

But that’s okay, they’ve made the cheeks wide enough to hold you firmly in place (so you can sit comfortably and correctly).

And all this… without tightening!

The tilting mechanism is off-center

In this price range, it would have really bothered me not to have an off-center rocking mechanism.

A rocking mechanism is very useful, because it allows the chair to move according to your body’s movements (forwards or backwards).

So don’t block it, because it will relieve the tension in your body.

The more you move, the more pressure is distributed to other places, so you don’t get too tired in the same place.

Secondly, the off-center rocking mechanism surpasses in every way a rocking mechanism that would be banal and “centered”.

And why is that?

Well, because with this mechanism, as the rocker is at knee level, your feet will always be touching the ground.

And because they’ll always be touching the ground, circulation in your legs won’t be cut off, and you won’t feel heavy at the end of the day.

What’s more, it even reduces the strain on your hips!

Class 4 cylinder (top of the range)

But that’s still a basic one, given the price of the chair.

Nevertheless, it’s worth noting, because sometimes there are some surprises, and I’ve seen class 3 cylinders on chairs costing 300e…

A class 4 actuator is the ultimate in solidity, durability and, above all, climbing force.

Basically, class 3 cylinders can, over time, give you a chair that’s going to struggle and go up a little at a time.

But with a class 4 actuator, this will never happen.

Steel frame and aluminum base

The frame is made of metal, which means you’ll be getting something both solid and lightweight (to make it easier to move).

That’s something that’s fairly commonplace in the gaming chair world.

An aluminum base, however, is much rarer and can only be found on high-end chairs.

And as it’s destined to be used by big/large people, it was really important to have an aluminum base!

Why is that?

Well, because the aluminum base is the most resistant chair base there is.

It can withstand pressures of up to 1 tonne.

So go ahead, jump on it, even if you weigh 150kg, you’ll have a hard time breaking it.

Armrests can be adjusted in 4 dimensions (max.)

Another very good point is the armrests, which are adjustable in 4 dimensions.

This is very important for ergonomics, especially when you spend a lot of time sitting.

But to be more practical, here’s what you get:

Height-adjustable (in a perfect world, make sure your arms are at a 90° angle), so your shoulders can relax and you won’t feel any pain.

A width-adjustable chair (you’ll need to bring the armrests as close to your body as possible). This avoids unnecessary shoulder tension.

If your desk is very deep, it’s very useful to be able to move the armrests back and forth.

Last but not least, angle adjustment will revolutionize your life, especially if, like me, you play with your keyboard twisted to one side, as you’ll also be able to tilt the armrests!

Nice design, but nothing more

Honestly, especially in black, the Gladiator looks like any other gaming chair.

They may have put their logo everywhere, but it’s still a simple black bucket chair.

In fact, I’d go so far as to say they’ve overdone it a little, the thing’s just EVERYWHERE.

You can see the logo 5 times just by looking at the chair in front.

I don’t mind being happy to have a DXRacer thanks to their reputation, but there are certain limits.

Otherwise, it doesn’t show in photos, but once you’ve got the chair IRL, it’s really imposing!

Finally, in terms of color, you’ll find it in blue-white, black-white, black-red and all-black!

Imitation leather is top-of-the-range

This is also very important for the chair’s durability.

What’s the point of buying a gaming chair only to have the leatherette crack or bleach after a few months’ use?

Fortunately, DXRacer uses high-quality, abrasion-resistant simili that won’t suffer this fate!

Nevertheless, I still recommend that you take care of them by applying mixa baby cream to them from time to time.

Both cushions are included

The first cushion you’ll receive with the chair is the lower back cushion.

It sits just above the waistband and aims to reproduce the S-shaped curve of your lower back.

This helps to prevent lumbar pain and to avoid strengthening/weakening the wrong muscles by sitting incorrectly.

Because if you prolong bad sitting positions for too long, you can end up with a pelvis that’s shifted forwards or backwards…

The neck cushion is more optional, because you can do without it if you like.

But… It greatly helps to reproduce the “neutral” position your neck is supposed to have.

So use it because, frankly, in LANs and competitions I see too many guys with their necks so far forward it’s scary.

It won’t make you play any worse or better, but your body will thank you.

The finishes are unique to DXRacer (as are the stitching).

Nothing to complain about in terms of finish:

  • No play
  • No squeaking
  • No cheap plastic parts
  • No looseness in the imitation, everything is well “pulled”.

As for the seams, nothing to complain about, they’re clean and they’ve even protected them with a strip of imitation leather.

I don’t understand why all brands don’t do this, it can’t be that expensive to make though…

Smooth-running wheels on virtually any floor

Now, when I say fluid, guys, I mean fluid for 99% of the population.

I know some of you buy big rollerblade wheels to navigate from one office to another.

You can keep doing it!

The rest of you will be fine, they roll quite well, except on certain types of floor like the one in my bloody bedroom (ah lino…).

Backrest tilt up to 135°

It’s far from being one of the most reclining backrests.

It’s just enough to find a good sitting position.

Basically, it’ll let you watch a few Twitch lives or whatever in a relaxed position, but it’s a long way from the 180° offered by some other brands.

Personally, I tend to prefer 160° or thereabouts, because it lets you lean back and take a nap or watch a movie with your feet up on a stool!

So there you have it, it’s not the best, but it may be enough depending on your use.

What are the settings for the DXRacer Gladiator?

For adjustment, the lever under the seat on the right raises/lowers the chair.

The lever on the left locks/unlocks the tilt mechanism.

The knob under the seat adjusts the sensitivity of the tilting mechanism.

As for the armrests, they can be adjusted either by moving them directly, or by using the knob on the outside of the armrest (to raise/lower them).

However, there’s also another at the end of the armrest, on the inside, to move them forward/backward.

(And the one in the middle, to adjust their width).

Finally, the lever on the right-hand side of the backrest allows you to tilt the chair back into the position you prefer.

Easy to assemble like most chairs

I don’t know if it’s me who’s getting too used to it, but frankly it’s too easy to ride.

20 minutes maximum, or 30 minutes if you make yourself a cup of coffee while assembling it.

The tools needed for assembly are all supplied, so you don’t need to prepare anything.

Just a little brain time while you assemble it, and you’re done.

Introducing DXRacer Gladiator G001

Other gamers' opinions

And since it’s good to have several sources of opinion, here’s a quick recap:

  • People love the adjustable armrests
  • Comfort and aesthetics
  • Say it’s a perfect fit for big and tall gamers

However, I’ve seen some people complain that their piston gave out.

In theory I don’t think it’s DXRacer’s fault, given that it’s a class 4 piston, but it’s still interesting to note and to know.

So I’m telling you!

secretlab titan evo 2022.jpg

How can we not mention the titan evo?

It surpasses the Gladiator in every way, since both chairs have everything in common, except that the Titan has a maximum tilt of 165°, a magnetized headrest and lumbar support integrated directly into the chair.

I’d recommend it, but it’s up to you if you’ve got the budget.

It’s even in my top list of the best gaming chairs.

aerone platinum 3.jpg

Next, the Aerone platinum is a good rival.

It also has 4D armrests like the gladiator, an off-center rocking mechanism, high-density foam, etc. But where it really stands out is its backrest recline.

But where it really stands out is its backrest tilt of up to 170° and its incredibly low price compared to the DXRacer Gladiator.

I’d also recommend it, as it’s specially adapted for taller people.

Read my review of the Aerone Platinum.

quersus vaos 505.jpg

Finally, I recommend all GEOS models from Quersus.

The prices are similar and the functionalities almost identical, BUT the Quersus design is incredible compared to DXRacer and the tilt mechanism is much more qualitative.

The only drawback is that the backrest only reclines via a rocker, so you can’t tilt it to your liking…
